Audio Formats
3GP - 3GP is container format similar to MP4. The 3GP file format was designed to decrease storage and bandwidth requirements in order to accommodate mobile phones.

ASF - Advanced Systems Format, is Microsoft's proprietary digital audio/video container format, especially meant for streaming media. asf is part of the Windows Media framework.

AVI - Audio Video Interleave, is a multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in November 1992 as part of its Video for Windows technology. AVI files can contain both audio and video data in a file container that allows synchronous audio-with-video playback.

DivX - is a brand name of products created by DivX, Inc. including the DivX Codec which has become popular due to its ability to compress lengthy video segments into small sizes while maintaining relatively high visual quality.

FLV - is a file format used to deliver video over the Internet via Adobe Flash Player, Flash Video content may also be embedded within .swf files. Notable users of the Flash Video format include YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo! Video, Reuters.com

MKV - is a container (hence the name Matroska, in reference to the Russian dolls contained within another) making it possible to contain video (DivX, Xvid, RV9, etc), sound (MP3, MP2, AC3, Ogg, AAC, DTS, PCM), as well as subtitles (SRT, ASS, SSA, USF, etc) in the same file.

MPEG - stands for Moving Picture Expert Group in charge of the development of standards for coded representation of digital audio and video. There are several audio/video formats which bear this group's name, such as MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG-4.

MP4 - MP4 is the global file extension for the official container format defined in the MPEG-4 standard. MP4 is streamable and supports all kinds of multimedia content, multiple audio-, video-, subtitle streams, pictures, variable-frame rates, -bitrates, -samplerates...) and advanced content like 2D and 3D animated graphics, user interactivity, DVD-like menus. The MP4 file format is widely support by many portable devices such as iPod, iPhone, Zune, PSP etc.

RM - stands for Real Media. Real Media is one of the most popular formats for streaming content on the Internet, RealMedia includes the RealAudio codec for sound clips and RealVideo codec for movies.

RMVB - RealMedia Variable Bitrate (RMVB) is a variable bitrate extension of the RealMedia multimedia container format developed by RealNetworks.

WMV - Windows Media Video, normally use the ASF container and the files end in either .wmv or .asf. The file ending is irrelevant and you could rename asf to wmv and it would still work. WMV is a group of codecs just like MPEG-4.

XviD - is an ISO MPEG-4 compliant video codec. It's not a product but an open source project which is developed and maintained by people around the world.

MOV - the QuickTime (.mov) file format functions as a multimedia container file that contains one or more tracks, each of which stores a particular type of data: audio, video, effects, or text (e.g. for subtitles).

DPG - is the Video format for Nintendo DSL game player, which created by Mr Moonlight, composed of mpeg1video and mpeg2 audio.

MTS - MTS also is one of high definition video file types, which are raw AVCHD videos recorded by AVCHD camcorders.

AAC - Stands for Advanced Audio Coder, is a standardized, lossy compression and encoding scheme for digital audio. Designed to be the successor of the MP3 format it has better sound quality and smaller size than MP3.

APE - (monkey's audio) A file with the extension .ape, is an audio file compressed using Monkey's Audio. Monkey's Audio is a lossless compression, which means it does not permanently discard data during compression. It achieves compression rates of around 40%. Since it is lossless, the quality of the audio after compression will be the exact same.

M4A - The audio file format used by Apple in their popular iTunes Music Store often appears on your system with the ".M4A" filename extension. M4A can produce better audio quality than MP3 using less physical space for the files.

M4P - M4P format is "protected AAC". It is a format of purchased music that can be listened to only through the iTunes softer or an iPod.

MIDI - Standard MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) file; contains music data such as what notes are played, when they are played, how long each note is held, and the loudness (velocity) of each note.

MP3 - is an acronym for MPEG-1 (or MPEG-2) Layer 3 audio encoding (it is not an acronym for MPEG-3). MP3 is a popular compression format used for audio files on computers and portable devices.

OGG - is a free, open standard container format, commonly used to refer to audio file format Ogg Vorbis, that is, Vorbis-encoded audio in the Ogg container.

FLAC - Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) is a file format for lossless audio data compression. During compression, FLAC does not lose quality from the audio stream, as lossy compression formats such as MP3, AAC, and Vorbis do.

WMA - Windows Media Audio (WMA) is an audio data compression technology developed by Microsoft. Windows Media Audio is one of today's most popular Net audio formats. Though not as popular as MP3, WMA tends to outperform MP3 in the area of sound quality, particularly with files encoded at lower bitrates like 64 or 96 Kbps. This performance advantage makes it handy for applications like portable digital audio players, where total play time is limited by a finite amount of internal memory.
